So what is an environmentally friendly substitute to Easter egg dye kits? You probably have the ingredients right in your kitchen!
Put eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add enough water to just cover the eggs, and add a teaspoon of vinegar. Add your “natural dye” and bring water to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. So what can you use for the “natural dyes”? Kitchen scraps!
Pale red/Purple = canned beet juice
Orange = yellow onion skins
Light yellow = orange or lemon peels
Yellow = ground tumeric
Light Green = Granny Smith apple peels or spinach leaves
Blue/Purple = Canned blueberry juice or red cabbage leaves
Beige/Brown = strong brewed tea/coffee
To keep it frugal, make sure you are only using the scraps, don’t waste good produce. Use old coffee grounds, leftover beet/blueberry juice, etc. You can also use it as a science project to teach your children. My kids love any hands-on “experiments”!

omg, I have turmeric!!! I should try it...of course we dont need all these chemicals to dye the eggs! My grannie never used any of it. I think she even used henna to get the red....I think, dont take my word for it :-)
