New Year's Resolutions

It’s that time again. We all start reassessing our lives, making plans for what we want to change, improve on, and get rid of. Have you started, yet? I have, and I decided to share my list.

What’s the one thing at the top of most women’s New Year’s Resolution list? You guessed it. Diet and Exercise. Of course, these are my first thoughts of what I want to change. So #1 for me is---Eat healthier, lose weight, exercise more.

My children are blessed. They have several sets of grandparents including greats and even one great-great. They also have lots of aunts and uncles, including the greats and great-greats. Needless to say they got tons of Christmas gifts. Yes, I donated a lot of their older things and we dropped them off. But they still have much that needs organized, labeled for easier put away, and clothes that need gone through. This brings me to my #2 goal---Organize. I am going to start in the kids’ rooms and go from there. If I can get their’s completely done, I am hoping to be motivated to move to other rooms, including cabinets and closets.

You may remember my post about my family starting to recycle, if not check it out HERE. My #3 goal---Recycling. This includes plastics, aluminum, metal, tin, everything. This will take some planning, since we don’t have much room for storage in between trips (we don’t have pick up service), but I want to teach my children the importance of recycling to cut down on waste and save resources.

#4---Learn something new. I would love to take at least one crafting class this summer. I don’t know exactly which one yet, because there are several that I have been wanting to try. I would love to hear some of your favorites, whether it’s pottery, beading, sewing, etc., and how or where you learned.

This may sound a little like #4, but I am separating them out because I intend to do both. #5---Learn to sew. I have had my first sewing machine for 2 years now, and have yet to take it out of the box. There are lots of things I would love to make, and know that if I meet this goal, I will feel a sense of accomplishment for the year, even if I fail in my other attempts.

Last, but not least, is to save extra. I don’t want to give this a number because I aim to accomplish this goal every day. If I can do something simple, whether it be active (washing out our sandwich bags) or non-active (refraining from eating out when I can cook at home), then my goal is accomplished.

I was reading some statistics about New Year’s resolutions and was a little discouraged to find that only 8% of the of people who set out to make changes are successful. I decided that if there was only going to be 8%, then I wanted to be included. Here is what I came up with:

1. Have a plan. Don’t just say, “I want to lose weight.” Say, “I want to lose 10 lbs. by the end of February,” then plan out how you are going to accomplish that, maybe join a club, or make out your new healthy menu for each month. You can also plan to accomplish one change a week, such as eating five servings of fruit and veggies a day.
2. Break it down. Start with your main goal, then break it down into smaller, easily achieved tasks. If you want to organize your kitchen, plan to clean out one drawer or cabinet every day. Don’t overdo it, so you won’t become overwhelmed by the larger goal.
3. Make a list. Don’t just write down your main goals, write down the small steps you need to take to achieve those goals As you accomplish each task, you can cross them off the list. This can be a great motivator because it is instant gratification, and the larger goal won’t seem as hard to achieve.
4. Re-find your motivation. No matter what we do, motivation can lag if we aren’t seeing results or have had a bad week. Go back and figure out what motivated you to start with. Was it a picture of your “skinny” self, a picture of your dream home, or maybe just a friend’s well thought out kitchen set-up. If it’s a picture, make copies and tape it where you will see it often---the bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or your checkbook. While you are first starting out and motivated, try writing yourself a letter to only be opened when you are at that midpoint and getting discouraged. Who better understands what kind of encouragement you’ll need than yourself?

So now that I have an idea of what I want to accomplish, I need to start making my plan and breaking it down, so I can get started by the 1st. I hope this helps encourage or motivate some of you. I would love to hear what your resolutions are and what you do for motivation.

Coupon Organizer Giveaway

Do you have a certain way you organize your coupons? I have been doing the envelope deal (a different envelope for each category, then you have to search through the entire envelope seeing what you have), but am not satisfied. I was thinking about getting baseball card or photograph protectors to put in a binder, but wondered how this would work, since I'd always have to take a big binder to the store with me. Needless to say, I've been reading up on what others do and have seen some great ideas, but just haven't found the one that meets my exact needs. I have read often about's Price Planner, and have heard great things. Well, I have good news!

Thrifty Thoughts is offering one on her great giveaway! Ends 12/27, so hurry and enter before your time is up!

I would love to hear from you on how you organize your coupons, and the system you use at the store, so be sure to leave a comment.

Happy Savings!

Gifts in a Jar

I talked a little bit about Gifts in a Jar HERE, but I want to go back to it before Christmas. These are great for last minute gifts, hostess gifts, teacher gifts, etc. They are quick, easy, and inexpensive. You can find all kinds of recipes on the internet, along with downloads of the recipes to print out on tags. The tops of the jars can be covered with scrap fabric, raffia, buttons, beads, shells, etc. You can add a miniature wooden spoon or spatula, measuring spoons, or cookie cutters to dress it up. Don’t just stop with baking recipes, either. Try drink mixes, bath salts, soup mixes, almost anything that has several dry ingredients. They all look pretty layered, so use your imagination!

I have a book that I bought when my son’s school was doing a fundraiser, you know the ones where you pick something out and try to get something useful or cheap, but everything in there you already have, don’t need, or “cheap” is still $10. I was amazed that I found this since I knew I would actually use it this year. It’s called Gifts in a Jar, Cookies, Brownies & Bars. It even comes with precut fabric circles, tear out recipe tags and raffia for bows. It’s great, but I wouldn’t have bought it on my own, since the same information can be gotten for free from library books and the good ol’ web.

Anyway, I do want to share a few recipes and pics I found to get you started so you can see how easy and cute these are.

Courtesy of
Holiday Cookies

1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chocolate-covered candy (such as holiday M&M's or Hershey's Holiday Candy Coated Bits)
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup cocoa crisped-rice cereal (or regular flavor)
1/2 cup white chocolate chips
In a 1-quart wide mouthed jar, add the ingredients in the order listed. Pack them down firmly after each addition (use the blunt end of a table knife or a wooden spoon to level and tamp down each layer). Screw on the cover and prepare a gift tag with the following instructions:
"To make your holiday cookies, cream together 1/2 cup of butter or margarine, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 egg in a large bowl. Add the contents of the jar and stir until well blended. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto an un-greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 4 dozen."

Courtesy of
Classic Cocoa

Makes 1 quart mix or 12 servings hot cocoa
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup powdered milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips
1/2 cup miniature marshmallows
Layer sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk, salt, chocolate chips, and marshmallows.
On the back of the tag, write: "Mix contents in a large bowl. For each serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mix in a mug and stir in 1 cup boiling water. Store remaining mix in airtight container."

Courtesy of
Spiced Mocha Mix

1/2 cup powdered coffee cream
1/2 cup cocoa mix
1/3 cup instant coffee
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Add mixture to pint sized jelly jars and add a Gift Tag.
Directions for Use: Add 2 Tablespoons of Mixture for every 1 cup of hot water.

Courtesy of
Friendship Soup Mix

1/2 cup dry split peas
1/3 cup beef bouillon granules
1/4 cup pearl barley
1/2 cup dry lentils
1/4 cup dried onion flakes
2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
1/2 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
2 bay leaves
1/2 cup uncooked alphabet pasta
In a 1 1/2 pint jar, layer the split peas, bouillon, barley, lentils, onion flakes, Italian seasoning, rice, and bay leaves. Wrap the pasta in plastic wrap, and place in the jar. Seal tightly.
Attach a label to the jar with the following instructions: Friendship Soup ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: 1 pound ground beef, black pepper to taste, garlic powder to taste, 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes - undrained, 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste, and 3 quarts water. TO PREPARE SOUP: Remove pasta from top of jar, and set aside. In a large pot over medium heat, brown beef with pepper and garlic; drain excess fat. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, water, and soup mix. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover, and simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the pasta, cover, and simmer 15 to 20minutes, or until the pasta, peas, lentils and barley are tender.

Courtesy of
Bath Salts

This recipe will make one 4 ounce jar, it is easy to double, triple etc., to make a larger batch.
4 ounces Salt - either Epsom Salt or Sea Salt or a blend of the two, both found at grocery & drugstores.
1-2 drops of either Lavender (relaxing), Orange or Lemon (both uplifting) Essential Oil, found at natural/health food stores, herb shops and spa/massage therapy establishments
In a mixing bowl (not plastic), add the salts and essential oils, combining them well and mashing with the bottom of the spoon to press out any lumps.
First add salts to a heavy duty large Ziploc freezer bag, add the essential oil to the salts and close the bag. Mush the ingredients around with your hands, gently squeezing the outside of the bag until well mixed.
Carefully fill a clean and well dried container with the mixture, cap and attach gift tag/product instructions.
Product Instructions:
Use a few handfuls for each warm bath, soak and relax.

Let me know if you try any of these or if you have any recipes of your own. I would love to see some pics!
